Airports are often not built in one day. Over time aprons and terminals may be expanded, leading to non-sequential stand numbering. If you combine poor visibility due to rain or mist with faded ground markings or inadequate signage (which is often difficult to place on a large concrete apron) it is easy to miss the stand. Self-maneuvring to correct the mistake may lead to collisions.
